How to Do a Leg Press
In short
The leg press has you push a weighted platform away with your legs while seated in a machine. It builds quad and glute strength with your back fully supported, making it a safe way to load the legs heavily, especially for beginners or those wary of squats.
The leg press lets you train your legs hard without balancing a barbell or worrying about your back. Seated in the machine with your spine supported, you push a platform away, so all your focus goes into driving with the legs.
It needs a leg press machine, so it lives at our Putra Heights centre. It is a great option for beginners building leg strength, people intimidated by squats, or anyone wanting to load the legs heavily and safely.
What it trains and who it suits
It builds strength in the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings assisting, all with a supported back. It suits beginners, people who dislike or cannot yet squat well, and anyone wanting safe heavy leg work.
Because the machine controls the path, technique is easy to learn, making it a low-barrier way to develop serious leg strength.
Step-by-step cues
- Sit with your back flat against the pad, feet on the platform
- Set your feet about shoulder-width, whole foot in contact
- Release the safeties and lower the platform with control
- Bring your knees toward your chest without your back lifting
- Press through your whole foot back to nearly straight legs
Common mistakes and quick fixes
- Lowering so far your back rounds off the pad, reduce the range
- Locking the knees hard at the top, stop just short of full lockout
- Pushing through the toes, drive through the whole foot
- Knees caving in, track them over your feet
Regressions, progressions and when to stop
Too hard? Reduce the weight and range. Too easy? Add load, slow the lowering, or try single-leg presses. This is a centre machine; at home, goblet squats and split squats build similar leg strength without it.
- Stop if you feel sharp knee or low-back pain rather than working legs
- See a professional if your back keeps lifting off the pad
