Returning to Exercise After a Caesarean

In short

Returning after a caesarean needs extra patience because it is major abdominal surgery as well as a birth. We begin only after your doctor clears you, protect the scar and core, and progress gently. If you have pain, numbness or healing concerns, we refer you back to your doctor or a women's-health physio.

A caesarean is a birth and major abdominal surgery at the same time, so coming back to exercise deserves extra care. Your deep core has been cut and repaired, the scar area needs time, and the muscles around it often feel disconnected or numb at first. Rushing here is a fast way to a setback, so we take it slow and deliberately.

Everything starts with your doctor. We only begin structured exercise once you have been cleared at your postnatal check, and even then we build the foundation before adding any real load. If you have ongoing pain, numbness, healing worries or any pelvic-floor symptoms, we refer you back to your doctor or a women's-health physiotherapist first.

Why a C-section return is different

Beyond the usual postpartum changes, you are recovering from surgery through your abdominal wall. That means the deep core needs gentle, gradual reconnection, and some movements that are fine for others need to wait. Respecting the scar and the healing underneath it is the whole game early on.

How we rebuild, carefully

  1. Wait for your doctor's clearance at your postnatal check
  2. Start with breathing and very gentle deep-core reconnection
  3. Add easy everyday movement and posture work
  4. Introduce light strength once the area feels connected and pain-free
  5. Progress load and impact slowly, only while symptom-free

Looking after the scar and core

We keep early work gentle around the scar, avoid straining or bracing that does not feel right, and rebuild core control from the inside out. Numbness or tightness around the scar is common at first; if it is painful, spreading or not settling, that is a reason to see your doctor, not to train through it.

Private and flexible

We coach at our Putra Heights centre or come to your home or condo gym across KL and Selangor, working around a newborn and your recovery. There is no prize for rushing, a patient rebuild after a C-section gets most women back to strong, confident training without the setbacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after a C-section can I exercise?+

Only after your doctor clears you, which is often later than for a vaginal birth because it is also surgical recovery. We follow your doctor's timeline and start gently even once you are cleared.

Is it safe to train my core after a caesarean?+

Yes, once cleared, but we start with gentle reconnection rather than hard ab work. We avoid straining the scar area and build deep-core control gradually before any loaded movements.

My scar feels numb or tight, is that a problem?+

Some numbness and tightness is common early on. If it is painful, worsening or not settling over time, please see your doctor. We coach around it gently and never push through pain.

Can we train at home while I recover?+

Yes, and many mums prefer it after a C-section. We come to you, keep sessions gentle and flexible around the baby, and progress only as your body and your doctor allow.
